My trip to New York was so inspiring but not in a normal way. I mentioned this in my radio show “Pardalis 101” this week and wanted to go into a little more detail about it.

So what happened in New York that really inspired me! Well, New York has always been a mecca for me …. the place where the best artists of all genre gather to create almost a mystical level of creativity. I always felt that being in Vancouver somehow put me behind and I would never reach my full potential as a result.

So …….. What happened?

The veil was lifted and I realized the mecca of creativity is inside yourself

…. it’s not where you live that inspires you

…. it’s not where you live that makes you a “great” artist

…. success isn’t going to happened because you live in a particular place

…. success is quality first and then getting it out to the masses

Great art can happened any where and any place and it’s our job as artists to bring it to the world.

Everyone talks about moving to Toronto, LA, or New York – the meccas of art – to find inspiration and to find success

but ….. I really believe that success can happen anywhere!

So ….  how can an artist do this?

First define what success means to you. Then work on creating that success

But one might say but success is through contacts and being discovered and how can that happened in my little old town?

That’s the beauty of the 21st century — all  you need a good laptop and internet to the world. With the right social media skills, you can get your art to anyone and anywhere.

Gary Vaynerchuk (social media guru – https://www.facebook.com/gary/?fref=ts) is always talking about quality and content. So first and foremost make sure your art is the best it can possibly be – surround yourself with like-minded artist who can drive and inspire you.

So learn your art — I hear so many artist say things like I don’t have a mentor, I’ve never taken a lesson in life — if that’s you, you will never be able to take your art to the next step because there isn’t any checks and balances in place.

Then learn the business side of the industry so no one can take advantage of you. Learn how to market yourself to get your art out there.

So ….. stop looking for the mecca and focus on yourself!
