Time to get away and take a listen to GETAWAY VAN
I love discovering new bands and a new band that I just discovered is Getaway Van and so had to to hit them up to see if we could do an interview. It was a great conversation and I hope you enjoy it
1. Did you have a common theme when writing this album?
Zack: Not exactly, we just took the songs we had written that we were most proud of at the time and decided that would be our album. If there is a theme it’s rock and roll and have a good time!
Derek: The three song writers, myself, Charlie, and Zack, brought our
own personal items to the table. There are stories of significant
others, family, personal hardships, observations of society, fictional
tales of murder – it really spans a wide breadth of themes. Each song
really caught the current mood of each writer in 2018. It’s a cool
reflection of where each person’s head was at then.
2. How did you guys come together as a band
Charlie: Derek and I used to play in a band together prior to Getaway Van, called Destructive Interference. Once DI fell apart, Derek and I
felt that that band had come to it’s natural conclusion and it was
time for a new project to reflect our ever-evolving sound/ability.
Enter Devon, a kid fresh in Vancouver from Kelowna, and the result of
one fateful craigslist post. We still needed a bassist, at which point
Devon enlisted the help of his childhood friend, and previous
bandmate, Zack. With the 4 of us getting to know each other, we
realized we all had a very broad taste in music, as a collective. We decided to use this to our advantage and translate that into a record that is full of different styles and influences. We felt like, in this
way, we could ensure that we would never get stale from song to song;
stale to ourselves, or others.
Devon: I found Derek and Charlie in an online ad. They asked me to
come audition for a new project they were starting, so I went to the
audition and got the gig. We were also in need of a bassist. I asked
my childhood friend, and old bandmate Zack to join. The rest as they
say is history.
3. Which is your favorite track on the album and why?
Charlie: Oh boy, is that a hard one. While I have a strong connection
to all of the songs on this record I’d have to say my favourite is
probably Ugh. I’m a huge 90s rock guy, and I get that grungy, angsty vibe that was so prevalent in a lot of the music I grew up listeningto. Also, I get to solo for like 2 whole minutes, which is always a
good time.
Devon: It’s tough for me, I love all of our songs. My favourite song
to play however is Lord I’ve Been Running. I love the classic rock
vibe and the drum part that I wrote for it. I think some the best parts of the band are in that song.
Zack: So Long has always been my favourite song to play. The emotion
and tone of the song hit very close to home for me, as I’m sure it
does for everyone. That feeling of unrequited love. It’s slow burning
beginning and explosive outro make for one heck of an emotional rock
and roll ride, and I hope people will love it as much as me.
Derek: I’ve always loved Branches. We released this song for the
first time on our EP ‘Burnouts’ and has been a staple in our set,
and really our sound. The song it a real jump right out of the gates
it’s why we always go back to it as the opener of our set. The huge
sound and psychadelic fuzz-wah guitar lead on it really sets a
precedent. It’s one song that I think defines our style. Love it, haha.
4. When is your next gig?
Charlie: We have our next show is a local jam festival called
Fallen Fest at Bully’s rehearsal studio on Feb 23rd, followed by our album release party on March 2nd at The Bourbon!!!
5. Why do you guys like performing live?
Charlie: I love enjoying music, and even more so, I love sharing that enjoyment with people. So when we’re playing and I look out into the crowd and see people moving, and dancing, and just… enjoying the music, there’s really nothing better. And when it’s live, I get to
crank their experience up a notch by going a little nuts on stage and
making it a visual spectacle, as well as an aural one.
Derek: Playing is the best part. We originally wrote these songs toplay together, it’s why we got together in the first place. It’s
what we love to do. It’s the thing we all look forward each week to
doing – always excited to get to the jam space. Naturally I think that comes out in our performance and is why people like coming to our shows. So with the fun we have doing, I just want to share that vibe
with everyone else too.
Zack: When I look out at the audience and I see people smiling and
dancing and just rocking the fuck out, that makes my life. I love
getting up on stage and just really giving the audience a show, really
making it memorable for them. I have so much fun performing for
people, and when the audience enjoys it, I feel FANTASTIC.
Devon: Playing live is what I live for. Practicing and recording is
great, but there’s nothing like a live show. We give it our all when
we play live, you’ll never be bored at a GV show. Seeing and hearing
people’s reaction to our music, and the energy that comes off of us
and the crowd is a special thing. I love it.
