A friend of mine posted a video on facebook with some very talented young children. They are very talented but I don’t believe that children should be pushed that become performers playing such difficult material at that young age. (see link below)

Why you ask, isn’t this a great way for children to focus their energy?

First close your eyes and try to feel the emotion the journey the fire – you won’t. They are just overly technically correct. It’s almost as if they are little robots. Their movements everything robotic. There is nothing artistic in their playing. To play such music, it needs to have fire from the soul. Life experience!

Two, Why do some people feel that we have to be in this huge hurry to create musicians – where is the understanding of what they’re playing? They’re so young – let them play less complicated material which grows with them and help them gain life experiences so when they get older they can play with emotion and technique. Now that’s an artist!!

Three, why do these kids seem scared to me? I have personally seen kids who play this  “well” and I really believe it’s a form of child abuse. By the way, kids whose parents made them practice so much and were supposedly “ahead” of the game. Well as adults, none of them play at all anymore.  Some of them tell me stories about how their parents yelled and even hit them when they would play a wrong note. One told she has a feeling of panic if she even hears piano.  Instead, kids should be nurtured and inspired with music so they will play for the rest of their lives.

Inspire a child to love music, love to share music, love to create, and the rest will come!

This is how I teach music.
